The existing retaining wall along I-80 eastbound between mileposts 1.20 and 1.50 located in Hardwick and Knowlton Townships, Warren County was constructed in 1952. It is about 1,470 feet long and comprised of 49 individual panels. The walls exposed height ranges from 13 feet to 18 feet. This segment of I-80 is located within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, which is part of the National Parks System.
After a detailed inspection in September 2022, it was determined that the retaining wall panels are in poor condition. Maintenance repairs to address scour erosion were performed along one section of the wall in 2021. Additional repairs are underway on four wall panels that needed immediate attention.
